Fire season began Monday

Fire season began today and will continue through the fall, said Jane Schmitz, fire captain in prevention for County/Cal Fire.

Staffing of fire crews increases when fire season begins, in anticipation of potential vegetation fires, Schmitz said.

Residents of the county should remember the following tips as the season begins:

* Mow only before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m. to reduce fire potential * The year-round 100-foot clearance around homes will be more strictly enforced during fire season, so residents should check to see if they are compliant. * Preventative maintenance on vehicles can prevent fires. Have a mechanic check your car before you go on any road trips, especially the catalytic converter and exhaust system. * Residents in grassland areas should have a spark arrestor on any small motors, including motorcycles, riding mowers and weed eaters. * Chains or other pieces of metal should not be dragging behind vehicles being towed.
