The 130-year-old Piedras Blancas Light Station north of San Simeon soon may be designated an “outstanding natural area” as part of a national landscape conservation system.
On Tuesday, the House of Representatives approved legislation sponsored by Rep. Lois Capps to preserve the light station, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Senate approved the legislation April 10; Capps expects President Bush to sign the bill into law soon.
The designation doesn’t provide funding to restore the circa-1875 tower and its 18-acre site, but could make it easier to qualify for grants for the Bureau of Land Management-managed property.
Capps praised various agencies, corporations, private groups and individuals for making the light station more accessible to the public.
She also lauded students at Grover Heights Elementary School in Grover Beach, whose “Pennies for Piedras” drive has raised nearly $4,000 since 2006 to help restore the light station.
Tours are available most Tuesdays and Thursdays and one Saturday a month; call 927-7361 for details.
