Bullies are using a small but powerful weapon to torment allergic kids

Food allergies affect an estimated 15 million Americans, including 6 million children, according to Food Allergy Research & Education. The prevalence of food allergies among children rose to 5.1 percent in 2009-2011 from 3.4 percent in 1997-1999, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Bullying, harassing and teasing of children with food allergies seems “common, frequent, and repetitive,” concluded a 2010 study that surveyed 353 food-allergic teens, adults and the parents of food-allergic children.

Rhino Ride: Bicyclist pedals down West Coast towing life-size rhino to raise money

Matt Meyer, 31, is bicycling down the West Coast from the Canadian border with a nearly 350-pound fiberglass rhinoceros in tow. The 2,000-mile journey he began April 17 in Blaine, Washington, is dedicated to raising funds and global awareness for the poaching crisis on rhinos in his home country of South Africa. Meyer is expected to come through SLO County on May 29 and May 30, 2017.
