New enrollment to drop by more than 20 percent at Poly because of budget cuts

Cal Poly is expected to enroll 1,131 fewer new students in the coming fall term because of state budget shortfalls—making admission into the local university even more competitive for prospective students.

That means 4,150 new undergraduate students are expected to enroll, compared with 5,281 this past fall—a decline of about 21 percent, university officials said Tuesday.

Budget cuts proposed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for the 2008-09 fiscal year would mean $9.9 million less for Cal Poly without a student fee increase and $7.3 million with a fee increase, according to college officials.
