A new farmers market has started in Grover Beach. The weekly market kicked off Sunday from 3 to 6:30 p. m. at Ramona Garden Park to accompany the Sizzlin’ Summer Concert Series performance by Impromptu.

The Farmers Market will continue Sundays through October at the park at 993 Ramona Ave. The first event had 20 vendors, and the city expects to reach about 25 vendors during its run.

Additional afternoon concerts at the park this summer will include Pureheart (Aug. 31), The Believers (Sept. 7), Up in the Air (Sept. 14), House Red Band (Sept. 21), Critical Mass (Sept. 28), Full Circle (Oct. 5), Hear the Darlings Roar (Oct. 12), Red Eye Junction (Oct. 19) and The Mighty Croondogs (Oct. 26).

Both the market and the concerts start at 3 p. m., and visitors can listen to music and peruse the produce stands.

Beer, wine, barbecue, flowers, arts and crafts, coffee, mini-donuts, a bounce house, face painting and crepes are available, said Julie Andrews-Scott, the market’s coordinator.

The market is being sponsored by the city and the Grover Beach Chamber of Commerce. The plan is to hold the market year round, but the City Council would have to approve that, Andrews-Scott said.

For more information, call the city’s Parks and Recreation Department at 473-4580.

Supplies for students

Lifebound Leadership will host a free event offering back-to- school supplies for youths ages 12 to 18 from 5 to 7 p. m. Friday at the organization’s center, 151 W. Dana St. in Nipomo.

The event will include free pizza as well as a mountain bike and iPod giveaway, said coordinator James Statler.

Lifebound Leadership offers several activities and programs, including a teen pregnancy prevention program, leadership skills classes with Vision Unida and an after-school homework base with computers and adult supervision.

Grover honors Marines

The Grover Beach City Council has presented Marine Corps League Detachment 680 a proclamation honoring and thanking its 147 members for actively working in the community since 1999.

The military group has provided assistance to the community and supported troops overseas.

The group was specifically honored for participating in the Marine Corps Scholarship Fund and the Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum and for operating Toys for Tots which provided more than 18,000 toys for children in 2007.

Other actions cited in the proclamation: assisting with the erection and maintenance of the flag pole on the hill at KS-BY, providing the flag pole for the U. S. Marine Corps flag at the Atascadero Veterans Memorial and for the Honor Guard, which has provided military honors at the burials of more than 575 area veterans.

The award also thanked the detachment for conducting Memorial and Veterans Day services at Los Osos Valley Cemetery and Memorial Park for 10 years.

The detachment was formed in 1999 and is one of the largest in the state.
