The Pismo Beach Junior Lifeguard program is winding down this week with participants getting to spend much of their time doing ‘fun’ activities until it ends Friday.
On Thursday, the 12-to 15-year-old participants will camp next to the pier to celebrate the end of the six-week session.
Participants, ages ranging from 9 to 17, learn a variety of water safety skills and some go on to become lifeguards themselves, said Pismo Beach fire Capt. Rick Howard.
“They’re taught the dynamics of the ocean such as where rip currents are located and how to use them to their advantage,” Howard said. “Our goal is to get them familiar in the water and to allow them to accomplish their goals safely.”
The program is one of the largest in the county with 115 participants.
