OnTuesday, the antinuclear group San Luis Obispo Mothers for Peace will try to convince the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission that it should prepare a thorough analysis of the effects of a terrorist attack on a storage facility for highly radioactive used fuel at the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant.
Representing Mothers for Peace at the agency’s headquarters in Rockville, Md., will be the group’s attorney Diane Curran and local activist Jane Swanson. The hearing is in response to a 2006 federal court ruling that the agency failed to consider the environmental consequences of a terrorist attack on the facility.
The agency then prepared an environmental assessment, which is much less thorough than an environmental impact statement. Curran will urge the commission to require that an EIS be written.
The hearing may be viewed as a Web cast either during or after the event by going to www.nrc.gov/public- involve /public-meetings. The hearing begins at 6 a. m. local time. —David Sneed
