Pismo Beach
A former Pismo Beach firefighter died this week after helping battle the Humboldt Fire in Northern California.
Kevin Pryor, most recently with the Newport Beach Fire Department, died Tuesday of an intercerebral hemorrhage, according to a department press release. He was part of a mutual-aid team that responded to the fire.
Pryor, 31, of Irvine worked with the former Pismo Beach Fire Department from 1999 to 2003 and was named Firefighter of the Year there in 2002, according to the news release. He went on to work for CDF, now Cal Fire, in Riverside County and joined the Newport Beach Fire Department in 2005.
Engineer Joe Matousek, who worked alongside Pryor in Pismo Beach, remembered a young firefighter with a dry sense of humor and a talent for mimicking the voices of his colleagues.
“He was a great guy,” said Matousek, who will travel to Pryor’s funeral with the five other firefighters who served with him on Engine 64 here. “He was a fireman’s fireman.”
A funeral Mass is scheduled for Tuesday at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church, 5801 Kanan Road in Westlake Village.

San Luis Obispo
The City Council decided it will financially support bringing the Amgen Tour of California bicycle race to the city, even though it could cost $20,000 or more.
In a 4-1 vote, with Councilwoman Christine Mulholland dissenting, the council approved giving the local fundraising committee for the race up to $20,000 to make up for an anticipated shortfall in funding. Costs associated with hosting the race are expected to be $35,000, and it’s possible the city could be asked to fund more of that.
San Luis Obispo has hosted the end of Stage 4 of the race for three years, since it began. Stage 4 ends one of the most popular legs of the race, in which world-renowned
cyclists ride south down the much-photographed Big Sur Coast to San Luis Obispo. The race will be held in February.

Moren operates a health and fitness company called People Fit USA and is controller for Paranetics Technology, based in Cayucos.
