Jubilant Pismo Beach youngsters celebrated the unofficial start of summer Friday with Pizza at the Pier, a free annual event sponsored by the city’s Police Department.

Officers handed out 432 slices — equal to 36 large cheese and pepperoni pizzas —which had been donated by Del’s Pizzeria in Shell Beach. The only rule: You had to be younger than 18.

The Police Department puts on the event as a way to thank local youths for their support and for staying out of trouble, police Chief Joe Cortez said.

“We rarely get calls to the (area) schools, so it’s a thank-you, as well as a way to kick off summer,” Cortez said.
