Fire officials on Thursday said their investigation into the cause of the devastating 49 fire this week is continuing, with the cause not yet determined.
"Investigators were on hands and knees yesterday with magnifying glasses" looking for clues in the area where the fire started, near Highway 49 and Rock Creek Road, said Daniel Berlant, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman.
The fire was reported Sunday afternoon and was contained Tuesday. It destroyed 63 homes and three businesses. Another six businesses and three homes were damaged.
Berlant said investigators are looking at, among other possibilities, whether the fire may have been started by a tossed cigarette or by a power pole fire. Officials have not ruled out arson, Berlant said.
