Three thrilling whites, chilled to perfection

As the weather warms, I find myself gravitating more toward white wine, especially crisp, refreshing whites. My recommendations this week focus on local bottles that, when served well-chilled, would be perfect for sipping with a light meal or snack on the deck or patio on a warm spring day.

Justin Vineyards & Winery 2007 Sauvignon Blanc, $15

For this wine, Justin gathers grapes from two Paso Robles vineyards, one on the east side and one on the west. The wine didn’t spend any time in wood, nor did it undergo malolactic fermentation. All that results in a sauvignon blanc that’s crisp and citrusy, with pink grapefruit and tangerine flavors and a hint of grassiness.

Domaine Alfred 2007 Pinot Gris, $24

This white from Domaine Alfred in the Edna Valley is fresh and crisp, with flavors of lemon and spiced apple. The finish is a little drying, so this is a better wine to drink with food (any sort of fish or shellfish would be a good match) than as an aperitif.

Robert Hall Winery 2007 Viognier, $20

Viognier can easily get too heavy, with excessive “heat” from alcohol, but Robert Hall’s version is bright, fresh and racy, with flavors of white peach and citrus and some pretty floral notes. It’s a lovely, well-balanced white.
