Paso shows another side: Whites that rock

Although I usually think of Paso Robles as red wine country, there are some interesting whites produced, especially from Rhône grapes. I particularly like some of the blends, which often have additional complexity achieved through the use of a variety of grapes. Here are three fine white blends, at a range of prices, that merit your attention.

Clayhouse Vineyards 2007 Adobe White, $15

This blend goes beyond the usual grape combinations: It’s dominated by chenin blanc and includes chardonnay, roussanne, viognier and something called princess, a table grape that isn’t listed on the label because the federal government doesn’t recognize it as a grape variety for wine. The Adobe White is fresh and crisp, with flavors of apples and pears, accented by just a touch of creaminess.

Robert Hall Winery 2007 Blanc de Robles, $20

Blanc de Robles is a Rhône-style blend of mostly roussanne and grenache blanc, along with a bit of picpoul blanc. The wine is bright and racy, with juicy white peach and pear flavors, along with a slight floral note. It’s a very refreshing white blend for the warmer days ahead.

Tablas Creek Vineyards 2006 Esprit de Beaucastel Blanc, $40

Tablas Creek’s flagship white is dominated by roussanne, with grenache blanc and just a dash of picpoul blanc rounding out the blend. This wine tastes fleshier and riper than the Blanc de Robles, displaying rich flavors of white peach and apricot, along with some creaminess.
