Jim Bergman, 39, has become a key figure in his adopted home of Arroyo Grande. An assistant planner for the city, he’s become its liaison with the business community.
“Jim has made a substantial contribution through a number of important efforts and projects,” said City Manager Steven Adams, who nominated him.
Bergman coordinates programs ranging from Community Development Block Grants to agricultural conservation. He recently helped form the East Grand Avenue Merchants Association and is co-chairman of Arroyo Grande in Bloom, a volunteer beautification effort.
He and his wife of five years, Anya, appeared as grand marshals of the recent Arroyo Grande Village Improvement Association’s Christmas parade. Both can be seen around town planting trees or picking up trash. Originally from Lakewood, Calif., he obtained a master’s degree in planning at Cal Poly. An active member of the Arroyo Grande Valley Kiwanis Club, he also helps local high school students restore vintage tractors for the California Mid-State Fair.
“While I’m here, I’m going to do something, however small, to be helpful and not be hurtful,” he said. “It may have ripple effects in future generations.”
