Hoppes Garden Bistro in Cayucos will close after dinner service Sunday, its owners said Tuesday.
The longtime restaurant is owned by Brendan Fritzsche and his wife, Amanda.
The American food restaurant, located at 78 N. Ocean Ave., offers filet mignon, lobster risotto, quinoa, corn and baby spinach, grilled wild king salmon, and Cayucos red abalone, among other dishes.
The Fritzsches will continue to own and operate their nearby Schooners Wharf restaurant.
They purchased Hoppes from family members of Wilhelm Hoppe, who ran the business for several years on the North Coast before his death in 2010.
Hoppes family members continued operating the restaurant until the Fritzsches took it over in May 2013.
There are a lot of circumstances that led us to decide to close, Brendan Fritzsche said. We wanted to put more of a prioritization on family life. And the concepts of the restaurant were no longer resonating.
Fritzsche said that sales had been dropping and never rebounded to what the owners hoped for.
Brendan Fritzsche said Schooners, at 171 N. Ocean Ave., is a completely different concept than Hoppes. The Schooners menu includes fish and chips and Hearst Ranch burgers, as well as seafood and steak.
No plans have been made to sell Hoppes, and the Fritzsches are completing their scheduled special events and working to close out their lease contract.
Were sorry we couldnt keep things going, Brendan Fritzsche said. But well have more time with Schooners and to spend with our two young daughters and as a family.
