An elderly Oceano couple is being assisted by the Red Cross after their single-story home was severely damaged in a fire Thursday afternoon.

The Five Cities Fire Authority responded to a residential fire on the 2300 block of Beach Street in Oceano at about noon. Investigators said an outbuilding caught fire, which then spread to the neighboring residence and two vans parked nearby.

The residents, whose identities were not released, were not harmed in the fire, but damage to the home and two vans was extensive, according to Five Cities Fire spokesman Peter Klein.

Two cats were also rescued from the home and were in good condition Thursday afternoon.

Two Fire Authority engines and a Cal Fire engine responded to the fire.

Klein said the family had a home-based ice cream business. The ice cream was produced in the outbuilding and sold to area residents out of the vans.

An investigation into the cause of the fire was ongoing as of Thursday evening.
