Drone scares otters

Morro BayJuly 16, 2014

On the morning of July 14, I saw a man operating a drone over a group of 12 sea otters near Morro Rock. As the drone got closer, they — in unison — looked up and then dove, obviously startled by the sound. I approached the man and said they were obviously disturbed. He chuckled, then directed the drone away.

This indifference to a threatened species in order to play with new technology is an encroachment that we environmental stewards will have to report, as I did to a ranger of the Department of Fish and Wildlife.
