Cal Poly picked fourth in Big Sky preseason football polls

Eastern Washington is picked first in both polls, followed by Montana, Montana State

The Cal Poly football team was picked fourth by both the media and the coaches when the Big Sky Conference preseason polls were released Tuesday.

The Mustangs (6-6, 5-3 Big Sky Conference) tied for fourth last year with Southern Utah, Montana State and UC Davis.

Eastern Washington, Montana and Montana State are ahead of Cal  Poly in both polls, which had the top six teams in the same spot in each poll. Following Cal  Poly in both polls are Northern Arizona and Southern Utah.

In the coaches poll, Eastern Washington (8-0 Big Sky) received 12 first-place votes and 140 points to one first-place vote and 130 points for Montana, 111 points for Montana State and 108 points for Cal  Poly.

Head coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.

In the media poll, Eastern Washington had 34 first-place votes and 464 points, Montana and Montana State each had one first-place vote and 416 and 364 points, respectively, and Cal Poly had 329 points, one more than Northern Arizona.

Eastern Washington is led by quarterback Vernon Adams and wide receiver Cooper Kupp, both unanimous preseason first-team Big Sky conference selections Cal  Poly will begin its sixth season under head coach Tim Walsh on Aug. 28 at New Mexico State. The Mustangs then play at South Dakota State on Sept. 6 before its home and Big Sky Conference opener Sept. 20 against Portland State.

On offense, key returning players for the Mustangs are quarterbacks Chris Brown and Dano Graves and running back Kristaan Ivory, who ran for 1,113 yards and six touchdowns last season. The defense is led by linebacker Nick Dzubnar. Ivory and Dzubnar were named to the Big Sky first-team preseason team Monday.

In the coaches poll, Sacramento State is seventh, followed by Portland State, UC Davis, North Dakota, Weber State, Idaho State and Northern Colorado.

In the media poll, UC Davis is seventh, followed by Portland State, Sacramento State, Idaho State, North Dakota State, Weber State and Northern Colorado.
