Two people were injured Tuesday morning in a three-vehicle collision east of Shandon after one driver unsuccessfully tried to pass another motorist.

At about 9 a.m., the California Highway Patrol responded to an accident on Highway 46 just east of Highway 41. An investigation revealed that a black Volkswagen Jetta traveling east allegedly crossed the broken yellow lines to pass another vehicle.

Without sufficient clearance, the driver of the Jetta, a 24-year-old Salinas woman, went into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a gray Ford Escape driven by a 65-year-old man from El Monte. After the collision, the Escape continued off the north edge of the roadway, across the dirt shoulder and down an embankment, according to the CHP.

The Jetta then crossed back into the eastbound lane and struck a third vehicle, a Peterbilt truck.

The driver of the Jetta suffered minor injuries consisting of lacerations to her hand and complaints of pain in her arm. She was taken by a CHP helicopter to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo. Two juvenile passengers of the Jetta were not injured but were also taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The driver of the Escape suffered major injuries, including a broken pelvis, which were not considered life-threatening. He was also airlifted to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center.

The sole occupant of the Peterbilt truck was not injured.

Drugs or alcohol were not thought to have contributed to the accident, said CHP Officer Adrian Ayala, but the investigation remained ongoing as of Tuesday afternoon.
