A Founders Day Community Picnic will be held July 17 to celebrate Morro Bays 50th anniversary.
Sights and sounds from the 1960s will be in full swing at the event set for 4:30 to 7 p.m. in City Park at the intersection of Morro Bay Boulevard and Harbor Street.
DJ Joel McMickell, host of the Cuppa Joel morning show on 97.3 The Rock radio station, will play hits from 1964, the year of the citys incorporation.
Next will be Lenny Blue and the Landmark & Legacy Variety Show, a humorous theatrical performance by a troupe of local children.
Residents are invited to bring picnic dinners; Spencers Fresh Markets will serve a birthday cake as the crowd sings Happy Birthday to Morro Bay.
Memorabilia such as a restored 1964 Morro Bay police cruiser and a vintage fire truck will displayed, along with photos and souvenirs from the Historical Society. The picnic is a highlight of a yearlong celebration of the citys anniversary. Proceeds from the event will help fund a fishermans family statue titled Those Who Wait, to be installed at the harbor entrance by Central Coast Women for Fisheries.
