Beer-and-wine bar, restaurant opening soon in Arroyo Grande Village

Two new establishments — one a restaurant and the other a beer-and-wine bar — will soon open in the Village of Arroyo Grande in a building that had been occupied by J.J.’s Market.

Bill Hales and his business partners, who own several area bars and restaurants including Rooster Creek Tavern in the Village and the Wine Shed in San Luis Obispo, plan to open the beer and wine bar at 307 Branch St. It will take over one of two spaces in that building.

The bar, which has yet to be named, will not have a commercial kitchen on site, but it will offer small plates to complement the more than 20 beers and 10 to 12 wines on tap.

Hales said the success of the Wine Shed, which features a wide selection of wine and craft beer, prompted them to move forward with the Arroyo Grande beer and wine bar. With about 2,000 square feet to work with, Hales said the space will be comfortable, with a wine-country rustic décor.

Hales, who declined to disclose how much he and his partners are investing in the new venture, said he is planning to present the designs to the city soon. He expects it to open by the end of the summer.

“The build shouldn’t take that long,” he said. “Once we get permits and it’s signed off by the city, I would say six or seven weeks.”

Meanwhile, the owners of Robert’s Restaurant & Bar, offering classic American cuisine, are putting the final touches on their restaurant in the same building. Robert and Brenda Clouston also operate a Robert’s Restaurant in downtown Paso Robles.

Teresa McClish, the city’s community development director, said the city signed off on the building permit for the tenant improvements and is processing the business license. Robert’s Restaurant could open in a couple of weeks, she said.

Developer Nick Tompkins has completed the first phase of the Village Market project, featuring a 10,000-square-foot market with outdoor barbecue eating area. That phase included stormwater and sidewalk improvements.

Tompkins has not lined up a tenant for the market, which will be built next door to the former J.J.'s Market, and is still hopeful to begin construction sometime this summer.
