Youth Board update

Projects Coordinator, United Way of San Luis Obispo CountyJune 30, 2014

This past school year, 35 students were selected to serve on the 2013-14 United Way Youth Board, a volunteer organization for high schoolage students for all of San Luis Obispo County. Each month, they met to learn about SLO County, discuss community issues, participate in service activities and run fundraising campaigns. During the year, the board also awarded three $1,000 grants to local organizations that are making a difference in the lives of their peers through increasing an understanding of nature, inspiring higher education and reducing recidivism in juvenile hall.

This past spring, local businesses, including Rizzoli’s Automotive, the SLO Chamber of Commerce, ACE Miner’s Hardware (SLO) and Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center, partnered with the Youth Board to raise more than $600 toward their $1,000 goal for a fourth 2014 youth grant. Thank you to the many community leaders, volunteers and contributors who made it possible for us to unite teens from across the county to gain new skills, knowledge and abilities to give back to their community.

The Youth Board is now accepting applications for the 2014-15 school year. Interested students can complete an application, online at http://www.unitedwayslo.org.
