Pair of ex-Mustangs finish fourth at USATF nationals

Former Arroyo Grande High star, Olympic gold medalist Brown Trafton fourth in women’s discus; Vessey fourth in women’s 800

Former Cal Poly women’s track and field standouts Stephanie Brown Trafton and Maggie Vessey took fourth in their respective events Sunday at the USA Track and Field Championships in Sacramento.

Brown Trafton, a former Arroyo Grande High star, was fourth in the women’s discus, releasing her best throw for a mark of 193 feet on her fifth attempt while competing in the second flight.

Brown Trafton, who won a women’s discus Olympic gold medal at the Beijing Games in 2008, won USATF outdoor titles in 2009 and 2011. Her Nike teammate, Gia Lewis-Smallwood, won Sunday’s title with a mark of 216-5.

Vessey was fourth in the women’s 800 meters in 2 minutes, 0.17 seconds. Ajee’ Wilson won in 1:58.7.

Another former Cal Poly standout, Ben Bruce, was 10th in the men’s 3,000 steeplechase in 8:44.31. Evan Jager won in 8:18.83.

Also Sunday, USATF and NBC honored members of the 1968 U.S. Olympic team, including former Cal Poly star Reynaldo Brown. Brown, a Cal Poly Athletics Hall of Famer, won NCAA Division I high jump national titles in 1971 and 1973 after competing in the Mexico City Games.

Former Cal Poly high jumper and soccer standout Sharon Day-Monroe won the USATF women’s heptathlon title Saturday with 6,470 points.
