With the North County Indians nursing a one-run lead, Cal Poly recruit Johnny Balliet threw out the potential tying run at home to secure a 6-5 summer collegiate baseball victory over the Fairfield Indians on Saturday.

Balliet caught a fly off the bat of Fairfield’s Rupert Watson and threw to catcher Austin Kron, another Cal Poly recruit, for the game-ending tag as Bryce Hutching attempted to score from third.

Former San Luis Obispo High standouts Sinjin Todd and Davey Casciola had two hits apiece to lead North County (12-6). Casciola doubled twice and drove in two. Balliet was 1 for 4 with a double and three RBI.

Cal Poly recruit Kyle Smith earned the save with 1 1⁄3 innings of hitless relief.

SLO Blues cruise over Capitalists

Zach Merciez and three relievers combined for an eight-hit shutout, and four players had multiple hits as the San Luis Obispo Blues cruised to a 6-0 victory over the visiting Pacific Union Capitalists.

Merciez scattered five hits and a walk through five innings while striking out three. Max Gibbs, Alec Hansen and Blake Whittier allowed only four more baserunners in the final four innings for the Blues.

Erik Lewis and Taylor Anderson were each 2 for 3 for the Blues. Ryan Long and Conner O’Hare were each 2 for 5. Lewis and Long added a double apiece.
