The awards keep coming in for Coast Union pitcher/third baseman Grant Magnuson. Already named MVP of the Coast Valley League — and awarded “Pitcher of the Year” by Bronco coaches — the recently graduated Magnuson on Sunday was named to The Tribune’s All-County Baseball First Team.
A standout academically, Magnuson was named to the California Scholastic Federation, was named a Golden Seal Student, received the U.S. Marines’ Distinguished Athletic Award (baseball), and was the top AP English student. He plans to attend Chico State in the fall.
During his senior season, Magnuson hit a hefty .434 with 23 hits (including five doubles and a home run) and drove in 17 runs. His on-base percentage (.617) led the team. In 14 appearances on the mound, Magnuson was 8-3 with a stingy 1.87 ERA.
He struck out 57 players in 52.1 innings with his blazing fastball and nasty slider, allowing opposing hitters a meager .229 batting average. Magnuson pitched the Broncos into the semifinal CIF Division 7 game by holding the Dunn School Earwigs to one earned run while striking out five.
“I was pretty surprised when I heard I was on the first team,” Magnuson said, “because most Coast Union players don’t get on that list.” Magnuson plans to go out for baseball next spring at Chico State.
Meanwhile, junior Gehrig Kniffen and senior Quinten Raethke were placed on The Tribune’s All-County Second Team. Senior Emmany Godinez received honorable mention from The Tribune.
Kniffen led the Broncos with a .538 batting average, played error-free ball in left field and only struck out once in 84 plate appearances.
Raethke — whose baseball skills and outstanding performances as a wide receiver in football and a forward in basketball earned him Male Athlete of the Year honors at Coast Union — hit .472 and led the team with 31 RBI.
On the mound, Raethke struck out 54 batters in
43.1 innings and won four games for Coast Union, including a playoff game. Godinez hit .452 with four doubles and three triples, leading the team with 29 stolen bases on 32 attempts.
