It’s scarecrow-making time!

Although October’s Scarecrow Festival is still months away, festival veterans know it takes time and skill to create a great entry.

To help locals succeed, the Scarecrow Festival is again hosting a four-part workshop series on scarecrow-building. Workshop sessions begin at 10:30 a.m. and last three to four hours. They are scheduled for July 8, July 22, Aug. 5 and Aug. 12.

Topics will include creating scarecrow heads; fine-tuning features on paper maché heads; face painting and waterproofing; and bodybuilding and finishing your scarecrow.

Information will also be provided on celebrating this year’s water-wise theme and the opportunity to win an award for a water-wise scarecrow entry.

All workshops are free and open to both residents and business owners in either Cambria or San Simeon.

However, advance registration is required; go to and click on “participate.” Details on workshop location and required supplies will be provided to registrants. For more information, contact or
