The buck stops here takes on special meaning for the ladies of American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 432 who are planning the menu for Cambrias traditional July 4 celebration at Shamel Park.
Well staff the food sales booth while the guys do the actual cooking, said president Shelley Woeste, referring to the affiliated Sons of the American Legion Squadron No. 432. Choices will include tri-tip sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, chicken, corn on the cob, nachos and drinks.
Asked if calorie counts will be posted on the menu board, Woeste quipped Of course. Every day except on holidays.
Kids races, face painting, swimming, the Lions Club bounce house, waiter and waitress relay race and Linns pie-eating contests are on the days agenda, along with live entertainment by four bands: Coffee to the Conning Tower, Stellar, Held for Ransom and Rough House. The evening concludes with fireworks.
Food and beverage sales at the event and public contributions help defray the approximate $12,000 cost of the fireworks show. Any surplus supports the American Legion posts various community service and veterans projects. Among the food servers will be Ellie Brown, 83.
Beginning at age 8, I was taught to help other people, she said. This will be my 14th year working on our July 4 celebration.
Her association with the Auxiliary unit stems from military service by her father during World War I and her husband during the Korean War.
We currently have 124 members but would love to have more, Woeste said. Her telephone number is 927-2544.
Opening ceremonies are set for 11 a.m. July 4 at Shamel Park. Admission and parking are free.
