No weighted voting

San Luis ObispoJune 18, 2014

I have been voting for almost 50 years — from Fairbanks, Alaska, to New York City; in city, county, state and national elections. Over the years I have voted on various proposals, amendments and propositions that had no effect on me — taxes for facilities I would never use, gay rights, real estate taxes when I was a renter, etc. At no time and in no place have I ever seen “weighted” voting, whether based on being a landowner, homeowner, car owner, veteran status or any other aspect of life.

I am bewildered why weighted voting should be part of governing the Paso Robles water basin. In a democracy we all vote equally on how to govern ourselves. When President Obama goes into the voting booth, his vote does not carry any more weight than yours or mine. Why should voting to manage Paso’s water be any different?
