Nearby residents put out a small fire in the Salinas Riverbed in Atascadero on Monday afternoon.

At 4:20 p.m., 10 firefighters with the Atascadero Fire Department responded to multiple reports of a vegetation fire in the river behind some homes at Sycamore Road and Buena Avenue, according to a news release.

Firefighters found a roughly 20-foot patch of cottonwood trees and grass smoldering in the river area after several property owners reportedly spent 10 minutes extinguishing the flames.

The Fire Department then spent an hour cleaning up the area.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, officials said.

No injuries were reported.
