Alcohol and smoke

San SimeonJune 17, 2014

I don’t quite know how to define the prevailing mentality in our communities that comes up with such inane ideas for events as the high school martini fundraiser, which writer Ted de Mont laments as setting “a very low bar,” June 16.

Almost all SLO events, good, bad or indifferent, dance to the tune of alcohol and smoke.

Those good souls, for example, who organize fundraisers for children stricken with leukemia, always include a heavily smoking barbecue, apparently unmindful of the link between wood smoke and a variety of cancers. Adding alcohol to this carcinogenic mix sends a very confusing message to both children and childlike adults.
