Mental illness issue

TempletonJune 16, 2014

Tragically, another individual has chosen to kill strangers. A spokesperson stated that the latest shooter is mentally ill, as other recent shooters have been.

One important common denominator is that these mentally ill shooters have not been on any psychiatric medication. Some because they were never diagnosed or treated, but most because they chose to stop taking their medication, allowing their psychosis to spin out of control. They need to be held accountable as well as treated.

If Laura’s Law were enacted, mentally ill individuals who are known to law enforcement and won’t take medication would be court-ordered to take it for the protection of others.

Yes, there needs to be better gun control to keep guns out of the hands of unstable individuals. But clearly there need to be better ways to convince individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder to take their prescribed medications to stabilize their symptoms of paranoia and delusions.

There are significant research data that show that these illnesses are biological, chemical imbalances, and almost always respond favorably to medication. How many more have to die before we look at this side of the issue?
