An RTA bus heading to Santa Maria prepares to depart from the County Government Center in San Luis Obispo.

San Luis Obispo Regional Rideshare will offer free public transportation to students kindergarten through 12th grade this summer through the Youth Ride Free program.

To take any fixed route without paying a cash fare, students must provide their school identification at a bus running through Regional Transit Authority, San Luis Obispo Transit, South County Transit, Paso Express or Morro Bay Transit, according to a SLO Regional Rideshare news release.

Youth Ride Free began in 2012, when it provided 67,000 rides to county youth, the news release said. Rides increased to 84,000 in 2013.

Youth Ride Free will begin June 15 and last through Aug. 15. Regular fares will apply to Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo Trolleys as well as Dial-A-Ride Services.
