Local court officials are warning the public of an email scam that can leave a computer infected with a virus or other malware.

According to San Luis Obispo Superior Court administration, a number of residents have notified court staff of an email claiming to be a “Notice to Appear” from an unnamed courthouse. If a link, attachment or even the “unsubscribe” link is clicked, malware may be installed on the computer.

According to court staff, the scam is not limited to San Luis Obispo County but is being circulated across the country.

They advise residents that the San Luis Obispo Superior Court will never email a “Notice to Appear” to the public.
