Gun insurance

San Luis ObispoJune 3, 2014

Here’s an idea. Mandate liability insurance for guns. Require that all gun-owners in the city or county or state be insured. As it is with cars, proof of insurance would be requisite to owning and carrying guns — insurance with higher premiums for more powerful weapons. The market would sort out the high-risk people as insurance companies stop insuring people who might misuse their weapons.

There was an interesting discussion on the subject on NPR after the Sandy Hook massacre. Even the most conservative expert objected only in part, and his argument against requiring liability insurance is a variant on “if guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.” Something needs to be done. Mandatory liability insurance would be a step in the right direction.

Some municipality will be the first to pass such an ordinance — especially in the wake of Isla Vista, and with Richard Martinez speaking out so clearly for politicians to take action — so why not San Luis Obispo?
