Trieste, Italy (SportsNetwork.com) - Colombia's Nairo Quintana won the 2014 Giro d'Italia title on Sunday.

Quintana was the runner-up to Christopher Froome last year at the Tour de France and won the best young rider and mountain classification titles last July in Paris. He is the first Colombian rider to win the Giro d'Italia.

The 24-year-old captured the pink jersey as the Giro's overall leader after winning the 16th stage earlier this week and went on to finish the 21-stage event 2 minutes and 58 seconds in front of countryman Rigoberto Uran, who finished second in the Giro for the second straight year.

Italy's Fabio Aru was 4:04 off the lead pace in third place.

This year's Tour de France begins July 5.
