Former Arroyo Grande High star Jacobs qualifies in women's discus for NCAAs

Kentucky freshman is eighth in NCAA East Preliminary with mark of 178 feet, 6 inches

Kentucky freshman Madison Jacobs finished eighth in the women’s discus at the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Jacksonville, Fla., to qualify for the NCAA track and field championships.

Jacobs, an Arroyo Grande High graduate, easily qualified for the NCAA meet June 11-14 in Eugene, Ore., with her eighth-place finish of 178 feet, 6 inches. The top 12 finishers in each event automatically qualify for the NCAA meet.

At the West Preliminary Round in Fayetteville, Ark., Cal Poly’s Kendal Nielsen finished 35th in the women’s triple jump at 38-11 3⁄4.

In the women’s 200, Cal Poly’s A’Jah Love was 37th in an early-round heat and didn’t advance to today’s next round. In the men’s 110 hurdles early round, Cal Poly’s David Williams was 31st in 14.34 and did not advance to today’s next round.

Cal Poly’s Nick Woolf was 46th in the men’s 3,000 steeplechase, finishing in 9:28.66 and did not advance.

Former Cal Poly star Vessey second in Pre Classic 800

EUGENE, Ore. — Former Cal Poly star Maggie Vessey finished second in the women’s 800 meters at the Prefontaine Classic with a time of 2 minutes, 0.48 seconds.

Vessey finished second to Chanelle Price, who won in 2:00.38.

The two-day meet concludes today. Former Mission Prep and Oregon star Jordan Hasay will run in the women’s two-mile.
