Coast Union wins, advances to quarterfinal game at Dunn on Friday

Special to The CambrianMay 28, 2014

A huge home crowd showed up on Tuesday afternoon, May 27, at Coast Union’s baseball field to watch the Broncos win their second-round CIF Division 7 playoff game against the St. Monica Academy Crusaders from Pasadena, 8-1.

The Broncos will play Dunn School in the third round at 3:15 p.m. Friday in Los Olivos.

Quinten Raethke, who hadn’t pitched in several weeks, struck out six and gave up a single hit and no runs in five very sharp innings. Jake McAvoy came in to pitch the sixth and seventh innings and gave up a run and two hits to close out the Crusaders’ chances of making a comeback.

McAvoy’s only hit at the plate was a booming triple in the sixth that drove in three runs. Lane Sutherland had a double and an RBI; Gehrig Kniffen had a hit and scored two runs; Raethke had a run-scoring hit; Tommy Moreno had two hits, scored a run and an RBI; and Emmany Godinez had a hit and stole three bases (he now has a team-leading 29 bases swiped on the season).

On defense, Sergio Mendoza made a sensational diving catch in right field to save a run, and Grant Magnuson made some fine plays at third base as well.

Friday’s game at Dunn School will be broadcast on KTEA-FM (103.5) and stream live on http://www.ktea-fm.com.
