First 5 SLO County's executive director to retire

First 5 San Luis Obispo County Executive Director Susan Hughes will retire in October, the organization announced.

Hughes came to First 5 in 1998, shortly after Proposition 10 — also known as the Tobacco Tax — established local county commissions to provide services to children from birth to age 5, thus forming First 5.

As director, Hughes has overseen programs ranging from health and special needs initiative to school readiness, according to a news release. She also spearheaded a three-year community collaboration that resulted in the Children’s Bill of Rights for SLO County.

The First 5 SLO County Commission will meet at the end of May to discuss the search for Hughes’ replacement.
