Cal Poly track and field senior Chris Frias is the Big West men’s Track Athlete of the Year, the conference announced Wednesday, after Frias won the Big West title in the 5K for the second year in a row with a time of 13 minutes, 59.80 seconds.

Frias also broke a 31-year-old school record in the 10K in 28:45.60 and is currently ranked 11th nationally in the race.

Frias will return to the track May 29 to compete in the 10K at the NCAA West Regional meet in Arkansas.

Cooks wins top conference honors

Cuesta College Female Athlete of the Year Riley Cooks became the first person in conference history to capture both Western State Conference track co-MVP as well as field co-MVP in the same year.

The awards came after Cooks won the heptathlon with 5,110 points at the CCCAA state meet, breaking her own school record. She also topped Cuesta’s 100-meter hurdles record with a time of 14.33 seconds.

Cooks signed a National Letter of Intent this past week to run for Long Beach State next year.
