Location is key

Pismo BeachMay 16, 2014

I read the recent article about Derek Ehinger, owner of Blades on Ice, who is still pursuing building a permanent ice skating rink in SLO County. I support his plan, and I believe he needs to build a rink in the right location.

Most ice skating rinks in California are in populated suburban areas. The Santa Barbara area (soon to have a rink) and the Santa Rosa areas are the least populated areas that still have a rink.

A rink in our area would need to be in Grover Beach or Arroyo Grande to get the most population to support a rink. Arroyo Grande and Grover Beach are not too far from Santa Maria and San Luis Obispo, and land is relatively cheap in both towns. Possible locations could be putting an ice skating rink at an existing park or in an industrial area in Grover Beach.

Cheap land that can be redeveloped or developed and easy access for the majority of the population to get the rink will be key factors in finding a location for a rink.
