Hiring of Victoria “Vicki” Schumacher as the new superintendent of the Coast Unified School District, starting July 1, for an annual salary of $148,000 plus benefits was unanimously approved by district trustees Thursday.

The Board of Trustees hammered out details of the contract in a closed session before their regular May meeting. Schumacher signed the contract in a quick ceremony during the meeting, and then got hugs from each board member and Interim Superintendent Richard Malfatti.

The 52-year-old Schumacher has been employed by the Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified School District since 2010, where she currently is the assistant superintendent of educational services.

She began her career in education as a teacher, and has been an assistant principal, principal, director of assessment and assistant superintendent. She earned her undergraduate degree in music and a master’s degree in education from U.C. Berkeley, and her doctoral degree in education from UCLA.

The previous superintendent, Chris Adams, left in September to take a state-level job in Sacramento.
