Law enforcement officers from throughout San Luis Obispo County gathered Wednesday on the steps of Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa to honor their fallen peers.

The annual San Luis Obispo County Peace Officers’ Memorial Service was hosted by the county Criminal Justice Administrators' Association, the San Luis Obispo Police Department and the city of San Luis Obispo. San Luis Obispo Police Chief Stephen Gesell served as the master of ceremonies.

The Rev. Russell Brown of Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa performed the opening prayer at the nondenominational event, while Thom O’Leary, lead pastor at Mountainbrook Community Church in San Luis Obispo, gave the closing benediction.

In addition, county Sheriff Ian Parkinson read the names of the nine law enforcement officers slain in California in the line of duty in the past year.

Local law enforcement agencies will be at the San Luis Obispo Farmers Market Thursday night to showcase service dogs and emergency and tactical equipment.
