Forsaking rights

CayucosMay 12, 2014

The U.S. Supreme Court has upheld yet again the right of city councils to offer prayers at the start of meetings, as the Supreme Court itself does routinely each day. How sad that the Pismo City Council forfeited this First Amendment right of free speech and religion by caving in to a lawsuit filed by an intolerant pressure group.

How sadder still that our local newspaper, which ought to be the foremost defender of the First Amendment, goaded the Pismo Council into forsaking the Constitution instead of safeguarding it.

When Americans stop defending our constitutional protections, those rights are certain to wither away.
