Mustangs win 3-0, fall 2-1 in crucial Big West games against UC Riverside

The Cal Poly softball team split a home doubleheader against UC Riverside on Friday, winning the opener 3-0 but losing 2-1 in the nightcap at Bob Janssen Field to fall out of contention for the Big West Conference title.

The Mustangs needed to win both games against the last-place Highlanders to stay on pace with UC Santa Barbara (34-19, 14-6 Big West) and Long Beach State (37-17, 14-6), who also split a doubleheader Friday.

In the Mustangs’ win, Ashley Romano was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run. She doubled home Mariah Cochiolo in the second inning and scored on a fielder’s choice in the fourth for Cal Poly (32-19, 13-7). Courtney Tyler added a solo home run in the third.

Sierra Hyland pitched a complete game, giving up three hits and striking out three.

In the second game, Chloe Wurst pitched 1 2⁄3 innings, giving up two hits, two runs and two walks before Hyland finished the game by holding UC Riverside (23-30, 4-16) scoreless on four hits and two strikeouts.

Cochiolo walked and scored the lone run in the sixth inning on a passed ball, and Lauren Moreno was 2 for 3 for the Mustangs.


Big West Conference Championships Multi-Events

Cal Poly junior Devin Bennett is in second place heading into the final day of the men’s decathlon today at Toomey Field and Woody Wilson Track in Davis with 3,493 points, 91 behind the leader.

Bennett won the 400 meters with a personal-best 50.47 seconds. He also established a personal record in the shot put at 39 feet, 10 3⁄4 inches.

Long Beach State’s Garrett Demirjian leads the decathlon with 3,584 points.

Cal Poly’s Ted Scranton is in fourth place with 3,323 points, just ahead of teammate Nich Ahrold in fifth with 3,270.

Ahrold had a personal-best in the 400 in 51.58. Scranton also had a personal record in the 400 in 51.66. Ahrold beat his personal record by more than two feet in the shot put at 36-3.

For the Cal Poly women, Jessica Davis is in eighth place among 15 women with 2,637 points. She cleared a season-best at 5-01⁄4 in the high jump.

UC Riverside’s Danielle Littleton leads the heptathlon with 3,028 points.


De Los Santos honored as Big West’s top freshman

Cal Poly’s Justin De Los Santos was named Big West Conference Freshman of the Year.

He averaged 73.5 strokes per round, posted a season-low 68 at the Ram Masters Invitational in Colorado and had three top-20 finishes for the Mustangs.

Mark Anguiano of Cal State Fullerton was named Big West Men’s Golf Player of the Year.

UC Davis senior and Morro Bay High graduate Matt Hansen was named first-team all-Big West.

Cal Poly sophomore Cam Price was named to the second team, and De Los Santos landed on the third team.
