It was shocking to read in The Tribune that since 2009, Morro Bay is failing to meet debt service for delivery of State Water with current coverage only at 78 percent. A further shock was realizing the city has not raised water rates in 20 years, and thats why we are coming up short on debt payment according to water authorities repeated warnings. Was anyone paying attention in 2009?
In 2009, Andrea Lueker was city manager and Carla Wixom was on the council. Lueker was released as manager by the current council and Wixom, whos now running for mayor, continues to criticize the decision to remove Lueker. Yet no action was taken on water rates while Lueker and Wixom were in charge. Even worse, water reserves were spent down in those years to pay the debt coverage despite repeated warnings that rates must be raised.
Thankfully, Mayor Jamie Irons led this council, in October 2013, to initiate a rate study that is the responsible first step to satisfy our State Water debt and ensure water flows to Morro Bay.
Ms. Wixoms claims of fiscal acumen just dont hold water. Im voting for Mayor Irons, hes paying attention.
