The prestigious award takes into account general news coverage, breadth of coverage, story selection, quality of writing, editorial excellence, news judgment, graphic excellence (readability, makeup, art reproduction, advertising, presentation and appearance) and editorial pages.

The Cambrian competed in the weekly newspaper, 4,300 circulation and under division.

The Cambrian also won a first place for Coverage of Local Government for reporter Kathe Tanner’s series of stories on the controversy over Caltrans’ resurfacing of a section of Highway 1 north of Cambria, and second place for Page Layout & Design (Tabloid) for Managing Editor Bert Etling’s work laying out the paper.

The Cambrian’s sister newspaper, the San Luis Obispo Tribune, won four first-place awards and three second-place awards for investigative reporting, writing, photography and design.

Both are McClatchy newspapers, as is the Fresno Bee, which won for General Excellence in the 35,001 to 150,000 circulation daily division, and the Los Banos Enterprise, which was runner-up to The Cambrian for General Excellence.
