Divided loyalties?

Paso RoblesMay 7, 2014

The Tribune’s April 26 article on district attorney candidate Dan Dow’s ethics was troubling. The article reports that Dow accepted campaign contributions from Jim Murphy, a local criminal defense attorney.

On March 1, The Tribune reported that Dow accepted a campaign contribution from Jeff Stein, another local criminal defense attorney. As a retired SLO County deputy DA, I know both Murphy and Stein to have very active criminal defense practices here in San Luis Obispo County.

In my opinion, a candidate for district attorney who accepts campaign contributions from active local criminal defense attorneys presents an appearance of impropriety. When a candidate for district attorney accepts campaign contributions from opposing counsel, the public will question both the candidate’s judgement and whether he has divided loyalties.
