The Cal Poly baseball team experienced an up and down week on the diamond, which was accompanied by movement in both directions in five major polls released Monday.

The Mustangs, who went 2-2 this past week, including a series win at UC Riverside, dropped three spots in the Baseball America rankings to No. 7. They are also slotted seventh by Perfect Game, which is a two-spot improvement from last week.

Elsewhere, Cal Poly is ranked sixth by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (down two spots), 11th by Collegiate Baseball (down eight) and fifth by USA Today/ESPN (no movement).

The Mustangs (38-9, 14-4 Big West) host four games this week, beginning with today’s nonconference game against Pepperdine followed by a crucial weekend series with Big West-leading UC Irvine (32-14, 14-1).

Hyland earns Big West honor again

Cal Poly’s Sierra Hyland took all the suspense out of Monday’s Big West Pitcher of the Week announcement after another dominant stretch by the freshman phenom.

Hyland earned a pair of wins in the circle, breaking the Mustangs’ single-season strikeout record and helping sweep conference-leading Long Beach State in the process. Her six punchouts Sunday gave her 256 on the year, three more than two-time All-American Desarie Knipfer recorded in 1997.

Hyland did not allow a run in either contest at Long Beach State, improving to 11 shutouts on the season — another school record.
