New farmers market comes to Pismo Beach

A new farmers market opened in Pismo Beach last week.

The 55 Fresh Farmers’ Market operates every Tuesday from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Pismo Coast Shopping Plaza on Five Cities Drive, which is anchored by California Fresh Market and Rite Aid.

Pismo Beach now has two farmers markets; the Pismo Beach Chamber of Commerce also runs a weekly market at the pier on Wednesday afternoons.

The market will source as much locally grown food as possible, Market Operator April McLaughlin said. The concept behind “55 fresh” means anything within a 55-mile radius of the market is considered local.

“At my market you have to make or grow what you sell,” she said. “You can’t be a third-party vendor who buys it wholesale and sells it.”

Last week’s market — which McLaughlin considered more of a trial run — opened with 13 vendors from throughout San Luis Obispo and northern Santa Barbara counties.

McLaughlin has 14 vendors total signed up for the market, not including three additional farmers whose crops aren’t quite ready for market yet. She has four openings.

She said she would consider a vendor from out of the area only if he or she is offering something not available locally and isn’t taking a spot away from a local vendor.

McLaughlin said several local vendors have never before sold their goods at a local farmers market, including rose and strawberry vendors from Nipomo and beef from Pismo Beach.

Other unique offerings at the market include fish from Morro Bay, cheese from Santa Margarita and made-to-order beignets.
