Chief Warrant Officer 4 Richard Malvarose was named the state Assembly District 35 Veteran of the Year 2014 on Saturday by Assemblyman Katcho Achadjian at an Arms Forces Day celebration.

Malvarose is president of the Nipomo Chamber of Commerce.

Achadjian said Malvarose’s U.S. Army-taught dedication and perseverance has made San Luis Obispo County safer, according to a press release from Achadjian’s office.

“He is a highly experienced and decorated war veteran who has taken his heroism and patriotism from his time in the military and brought it back to serve our community,” Achadjian said.

Malvarose, a native Santa Maria resident, has received over 45 medals for his military service in Panama, Bosnia, Yugoslavi, Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan.

In addition to his current service on the Nipomo Chamber of Commerce, he helps fellow veterans receive benefits through the Nipomo Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Malvarose will travel to Sacramento to be honored with veterans from across California on June 25, according to the release.
