Water service was cut off along several blocks of Main Street in Cambrias West Village commercial district for about 2 1/2 hours Thursday in response to a leak in an old 2-inch water main.
Cambria Community Services District shut off water to about a third-of-a-mile stretch of Main Street after 10 a.m. and restored service before 1 p.m. Affected businesses were in the 800 to 1100 blocks, from Sheffield Street to Pineknolls Drive.
The leak was in a pipe in the center, open area of the Pinedorado grounds, between the Veterans Memorial Building and the Joslyn Recreation Center. While its on private property owned by the Lions Club of Cambria, the pipe belongs to the district and is used to service the memorial building as well as the grounds.
The aging pipe was patched, but the ultimate goal would be to replace it.
We want our service lines to end at the property lines, said Justin Smith, the district water department supervisor.
The town is under severe water-use restrictions because of the ongoing drought and a concern it may run out of water in the fall.
Smith didnt know how much water had leaked overall, but he estimated the volume was fairly small.
